Success straight off the bat

GIRL’S cricket is set to be the next big thing for summer sport in Swan Hill, with expressions of interest already reaching just shy of 20 for the Murray Downs Diamonds team.

The Cricket Victoria and Swan Hill and District Cricket Association (SHDCA) funded endeavour will see the girls field a team in the junior competition.

“There’s a huge push for female participation in cricket, which Cricket Victoria are supporting,” president of the SHDCA Greg Cruickshank said.

The come-and-try day at Barry Steggall park yesterday was well received, with girls making it out despite the heat and public holiday weekend.

The park is set to go a makeover in the coming months, with a council funded initiative to install a pitch that will become the Diamonds’ home ground, and outside of training and competition hours will be free for all to enjoy.

Mr Cruickshank holds high hopes for the league.

“All around the region there going to be girl’s teams springing up in this 12 to 16 year age bracket, which is the best demographic to get,” he said.

“We’ll be able to expand that, hopefully we’ll have a couple of teams out of Swan Hill, they’ll be playing against Sunraysia and the northern districts in an expanded competition.

“Hopefully the girls will really enjoy participating, Lyndon Chaproniere will be coaching the competition, and we’ll see their skills improving.”
