FARMERS hoping for a last-minute reprieve over the weekend were left largely disappointed once again after stormy weather on both Friday and Saturday failed to produce any substantial falls.
Swan Hill received about 3mm, while Kerang recorded even less with 2.2mm on Saturday. Outlying areas such as Lalbert did a little better with falls of around 10mm, but it is “too little, too late” for most, says local Virginia Smith.
“For most of the farmers it has come a little bit too late,” Ms Smith said.
“Some crops were just hanging on, but those in the sandy soil are already gone.”
Most of the region’s dryland farmers have started stripping scorched crops for hay following last week’s heatwave, which saw temperatures nudge 40 degrees for three days in a row.
