Kutcha inducted to honour roll

A MUTTI MUTTI man born in Balranald has been recognised at state level for his contribution to the arts and social justice.

Singer-songwriter Kutcha Edwards was inducted into this year’s Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll, a listing which acknowledges the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Victorians.

Mr Edwards’ career spans almost a quarter of a century — beginning back in 1991 when he joined forces with Koorie band Watbalimba.

He fronted successful Aboriginal band Black Fire before going on to record solo, releasing his third album in 2012.

Over the years he has campaigned vigorously for Aboriginal rights and been vocal about his experience as a member of the Stolen Generations.

When he was 18 months old Mr Edwards and five of his siblings were forcibly removed from his family, taken from Balranald to Melbourne and separated.

Almost 50 years later in 2013, local elders welcomed the six Edwards children back to country with a ceremony to allow them to reconnect with culture, traditions and family.

“There’s nothing greater than to go home and be welcomed again by your people,” he said.

“I’m sure my ancestors were welcoming me back.”
