SNAKE season has begun this year with a local resident warning others to take care after she found a brown snake on her property.
Joanne Anderson lives near Karinie Street and had an unwelcome visitor on Tuesday afternoon.
“The cat was playing with a brown snake when I spotted it, and our dog spotted it at the same time,” she said.
Ms Anderson’s Labrador pup immediately advanced towards the snake but fortunately heeled when she called it away.
The sighting comes as a timely warning that snakes are beginning to become active this year and Ms Anderson highlighted the importance of keeping pets safe.
“We had a cat bitten last year and it’s quite an expensive treatment,” she said.
Swan Hill Veterinary Clinic vet nurse Tammy Moss said depending on the breed of snake, costs could be as much as $1500.
“We have already had several sightings this year but no bites,” she said.
