Balranald mayor Leigh Byron is set to be re-elected for a third term, with all first preference votes counted in the NSW local government elections.
Euston-based Cr Byron topped the polls with 216 first preference votes at 1pm yesterday, after all votes had been counted.
Cr Byron was followed by Cr Steve O’Halloran with 156 votes, Cr Alan Purtill with 140 and new challenger German Ugarte with 134.
“It’s been a good result for me, but the one I feel sorry for is Steve O’Halloran because he only managed 156 first preference votes when previous elections he has trumped home with 400-plus votes,” Cr Byron told The Guardian yesterday.
“I think it is because this year we had a high standard of candidates with new ideas and a strong campaign through social media.”
