Flyers looking to respond to loss

SWAN Hill Lady Flyers will play back to back this weekend as they look to return to the winner’s circle after a defeat at the hands of the top-of-the ladder Bendigo Braves.

The Mallee side, who have a 2-1 winning record, will play against last placed Castlemaine tomorrow night away from home before returning home to take on Seymour.

If the fifth placed Flyers can take the win on the road and at home, they will greatly improve their chances at qualifying for the playoffs at the back end of the season.

Both the Castlemaine Cannons and Seymour Blasters are ranked lower than Swan Hill in the North East conference of the Country Basketball League.

The Flyers will hope to have their top side back on deck going into this one, especially the leadership point guard Kelsey McCoy provides to the team. She was missing from their 25-point loss to the Braves at home on Sunday.

McCoy has largely been the anchor of the side for a few years now, freeing up talented guard Laura Anderson to score long range baskets.

The prolific three-point shooter didn’t have an impact on the scoreboard with just four points, as opposed to her 20 and 27 in the two matches prior.

She was unable to drop a shot from behind the arc, having scored five in her match against Echuca the week before.

The Flyer bigs didn’t have a huge impact against the Braves and will want to respond in a loud way.

Zoe Fuller and Jenna Jenkins shared the duties at centre and were consistent but were boxed out on the offensive end by their smaller opponents.

A combination of flat play and shots which refused to fall had the Flyers on the back foot.

If they can return to their form from previous weeks, it is expected the Flyers will take a 2-0 sweep over the weekend firming their chances for a finals berth.
