EMERGENCY services have issues a Total Fire Ban (TFB) for the Mallee region today – it’s first TFB for the 2016/17 summer season.
Between 12.01am and 11.59pm no fire can be lit on the open air or be allowed to remain alight in the open air.
A severe fire danger is forecast for the Mallee with temperatures expected to reach the early 40’s and winds up to 40km/h.
Country Fire Authority Chief Officer Steve Warrington said the declaration of a TFB should act as a timely reminder that the summer season is fast approaching.
“Conditions are going to be hot and windy across much of the state. People need to exercise common sense. While fires cannot be lit in TFB areas people need to be careful everywhere,” Mr Warrington said.
“The hot weather has begun and although many parts of the state continue to experience heavy rain fall, there is still significant fire risk.
“Don’t delay making fire preparations. Discuss with loved ones what you’ll do if a fire starts nearby, and ensure your fire plan covers all possible contingencies.”
Senior Meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology, Steven McGibbony, said the Mallee is expecting a severe fire danger with the risk of dry lightning.
