Government blindsided with backpacker tax

AUSTRALIAN farmers were left reeling on Wednesday afternoon after the Senate defeated the amended legislation put forward by the government.

The Coalition expected the revised backpacker tax amendment to be passed today, but Labor, Jacqui Lambie and Derryn Hinch struck the revised rate of 15 per cent.

Those opposed to the tax want a rate of 10.5 per cent, but the Victorian Farmers Federation believe agricultural stakeholders just want an answer.
