The driver accused of fleeing the scene of a fatal car crash near Tresco on Monday morning has turned himself in.
The 31-year-old Lake Boga man handed himself into officers at the Swan Hill Police Station on Monday evening.
The driver was one of three Malaysian nationals in a vehicle which crashed as it travelled along Tresco West Road around 7am.
Police said the vehicle, a Mitsubishi sedan, swerved to avoid a fallen tree, running off the road and ploughing into another tree.
The crash killed the backseat passenger, a 28-year-old Lake Boga man.
The second passenger, a 23-year-old Lake Boga man was taken to Swan Hill District Health in a stable condition with minor chest injuries.
The driver fled the scene, with a police helicopter called in to search the area.
Officers blocked off Tresco West Road between the rail crossing and Cumnock Road.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives, Swan Hill highway patrol, paramedics and an air ambulance helicopter all attended the scene.
The driver was released from police custody on Tuesday morning, but remained at the police station where he assisted Department of Immigration officials.
Police did not confirm if the driver would face charges over the crash and said the investigation is ongoing.
The death is the 48th on Victorian roads in 2018.
A fundraising campaign has been launched on social media to raise $20,000 to fly the man’s body back to Malaysia.
