MALLEE health services are working to implement a strategy that would bring an end to doctor shortages in the region.
The 4 Pillars strategy was announced last week as a way to “future proof” the medical workforce.
Together, Swan Hill District Health (SHDH), Northern District Community Health, Cohuna District Hospital, Boort District Health, Echuca Regional Health, Murray Primary Health Network and Gannawarra Shire Council have agreed to advocate for the strategy to be considered by both federal and state governments.
SHDH chief executive officer Ted Rayment told The Guardian the strategy had been a couple of years in the making, with Northern District Community Health’s Mandy Hutchinson leading the charge.
“It is becoming increasingly difficult to find a general practitioner to work in places like Kerang and Boort and others like Robinvale have had some challenges as well,” he said.
“There have been a number of meetings where various stakeholders, CEOs and others have come together to talk about what we can do to try to alleviate the shortage in general practice.”
