Community spirit shines during Heritage Weekend

THE Nyah West and District Heritage Weekend brought the community together to celebrate the rich and proud history of the region.

The Anzac Day Dawn Service was a standout moment, drawing a significant crowd.

“It was probably the biggest service we’ve had,” said Heritage Weekend committee member Ian Brauer.

Although Friday night’s football was impacted by wet weather, the Saturday morning markets were a success.

A range of activities showcased the district’s heritage, including a bus tour of the town and a guided walking tour of the Nyah West Cemetery.

“The cemetery tour was very engaging and informative,” Mr Brauer said.

The senior citizens’ centre attracted an estimated 300 visitors, and “everyone was pleased with the range of displays.”

Throughout the day, the local primary school, fire brigade, and the bowling club were all open to visitors.

The Nyah West Farming and Heritage Museum also opened its doors for the first time and showcased a collection of old machinery, war memorabilia, and vintage items.

The weekend celebrations continued at the town hall with a community ball and the district’s oldest couple Ian and Thelma Watson cut the cake to honour the occasion.

Sunday morning’s church service was held by the Murray River and focused on the pioneers who shaped the area.

The local fire brigade also marked a major milestone with a ceremonial lunch celebrating 100 years of service.

While a community barbecue planned for Sunday was cancelled, the organisers considered the weekend a success.

“We offered a lot, and most of it worked really well,” said Mr Brauer.

“There were a lot of positive responses about the displays and events.

“It was an excellent weekend and a great chance for families to reconnect and reflect on our shared history.”
