Heritage hub reborn

The Italian Social Club (ISC) have celebrated the long-awaited opening of their new-look venue.

ISC president Nikki Capone said the renovated clubhouse will provide a fresh space for diaspora and the wider community to celebrate Italian culture.

“We would love to get some of the older generation back to teach some of the younger generation how to make special dishes like crostoli, mafaldine,” she said.

“Do some cooking masterclasses to learn some of the old techniques that are a dying art.

“We’d also like to have pizza night.

“We have plans to try and get some of the Italians and community members back to the ISC where it’s probably died off in the last few years.”

Last year the ISC celebrated their 40th anniversary.

The renovations mark stage one of the venue’s overhaul, with the next steps to include a new kitchen, bathroom and furniture.

Swan Hill Rural City councillor Les McPhee gave a speech at the opening, with attendees enjoying an array of traditional Italian cakes and slices.

The renovations were made possible by a $388,100 State Government grant and significant hard work from the community.

Ms Capone said the centre was important to ensuring Italian cultural heritage was not lost.

“My mother and father-in-law came over from Italy, and all their families came over to Australia,” she said.

“It’s important we don’t lose our connections to where they’ve come from, and where we’ve come from.”

Ms Capone also called on those interested or with Italian heritage to become involved with the club.

With renovations complete, the venue is also open for bookings for events and functions.

The ISC is located on Yana Street, Swan Hill, within the Ken Harrison Sporting Complex grounds.
