A NEW school year has marked new opportunities for Nyah District Primary School.
This year the focus is on community connectivity as the school once again welcomes the wider community to participate in various activities and events.
The proverb “it takes a village to raise a child” rings true at Nyah and principal Luke Dalton is looking forward to celebrating and engaging with the wider community once again.
“Nyah District Primary School has always prided itself as being part of a community hub, with parent helpers the backbone of our school, so it’s nice that we are able to embrace that once again,” Mr Dalton said.
The school has a rich history of sharing resources and collaborating with all aspects of the community.
“Three years ago that became difficult but we are making a concerted effort and look forward to inviting and welcoming the community back on-site,” Mr Dalton said.
This year has marked the return of many of the school’s community based activities, including the much-loved intergenerational reading program which brings everybody together through literacy.
The school has also held a welcome barbecue, celebrating the start of the new school year and a purple fundraising day to raise awareness and funds for the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.
Last month they also held Pancake Day which was a huge success with students enjoying some delicious pancakes.
The school has also resumed its Story Time session each Monday from 10.30am.
“We invite parents and carers with young children to join us in the school library each week during the term to enjoy story time, a selection of songs and nursery rhymes and a craft activity.”
Mr Dalton said community connectivity was important in small rural towns and helped to increase opportunities for shared resources, while improving health and wellbeing and reducing isolation.
“We look forward to organising many more events on our calendar this year where we can welcome families, carers and the community to help celebrate our school,” Mr Dalton said.
