It’s my pleasure, says 35-year Vinnies volunteer

FOR Balranald local Therese Comitti, volunteering at Vinnies was something she enjoyed doing, not something she expected to be recognised for.

But during National Volunteer Week, Ms Comitti was awarded a life membership to the NSW St Vincent de Paul Society by regional president Beth Coffy in recognition of 35 years of service at the Balranald St Dympna Conference and Vinnies shop.

“I just thought I was going to a volunteer luncheon, and they got up and said something about 35 years,” Ms Comitti said.

“I was just speechless, and all I could say was a big thank-you.

“I feel very honoured to receive this award.”

Ms Comitti said it was her enjoyment of helping others and working alongside many great presidents and volunteers that made her keep volunteering with Vinnies for so long.

“In the welfare there’s been a lot (of standout moments) because there has been a lot of people that we’ve been able to help along the way that have really appreciated it,” Ms Comitti said.

“It is very rewarding when you have been able to help along the way, knowing they have been given hope from the circumstances they were in.

“You always feel so good when you’ve helped people who are just so genuine.”

Balranald St Dympna Conference president Sue Balshaw said Ms Comitti was very deserving of the award, describing her as a generous, selfless, kind and caring person.

“Therese is a beautiful lady who epitomises what volunteering is,” Ms Balshaw said.

Despite all her years of service, Ms Comitti, 81, said she had no plans to stop volunteering anytime soon.

“I’ve enjoyed my time immensely being a volunteer and helping people that are in need,” she said.

“We are always looking for volunteers, so if anyone has a few hours to spare they would always be made most welcome to join.”
