Lockharts lead celebrations

TOOLEYBUC and Piangil District Action Group hosted some 120 guests at their Australia Day barbecue breakfast in Mensforth Park.

Joe and Ian Lockhart took leading roles in the proceedings as descendants of the man who unofficially opened the Tooleybuc Bridge in December 1924.

Joe raised the Australian flag and Ian spoke about the night the first Joe Lockhart let the old punt loose in favour of the complete but closed bridge prior to the official 1925 opening ceremony.

Murray River Council Councillor Gary Pappin also gave an address.

Barb Jones’ rubber duck took out first place in the annual duck race in the Murray River.

Tooleybuc did not present town-specific citizen awards.
