Vital contributions honoured

IN a night of entertainment and commemoration the Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum will host an evening dedicated to the women who served in World War II.

The Celebrating Women with Wings event on Saturday is set to be a special evening dedicated to recognising the vital contributions women made during WWII and their ongoing impact within the community today.

The event will feature a two-course dinner, with insightful guest speakers including Dr Helen Edwards and other presenters from across the region who will share their expertise and experiences.

Throughout the evening, Gerry Vytilingam will provide live music, adding to the ambiance of the evening.

Museum manager Markeeta Blair said the evening would serve as an early celebration of International Women’s Day.

“We celebrate International Women’s Day, March 8th, early due to out Splash Down and Rev Up event being held on March 9th,” she said.

“It will be a fabulous evening with fantastic food, entertainment and guest speakers.

“This year we are celebrating Women with Wings on Saturday February 1st at 6.30pm.

“We had a sell-out evening last year and expect the same again this year.”

A key focus of the evening will be honouring the contributions of the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) during WWII.

The WAAAF played a pivotal role in supporting Australia’s defence by filling crucial positions which were traditionally held by men.

These positions, which allowed men to serve in active combat roles, included a diverse range of trades such as clerical, administrative, signaling, aircraft maintenance, and driving RAAF vehicles.

At the Lake Boga No.1 Flying Boat Repair Depot, these women served in 73 different roles, contributing significantly to the war effort.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own drinks to enjoy throughout the evening.

The dress code is neat casual with bookings required.
