School’s sense of belonging

TOOLEYBUC Central School is a P12 education option located in New South Wales that allows students continuity as they study both primary and high school classes there.

The benefit of a P12 school is combined facilities accessible to all students and smooth transitions between grades with minimal change from foundation level to Year 12.

With 127 students, the school prides itself on its wellbeing program and incorporates the PAX Good Behaviour Game into its junior school curriculum.

The NSW Department of Education introduced the internationally recognised program as a way to strengthen peace, productivity, health and happiness through 10 evidence-based strategies that aims to help children with self-regulation, , strengthening peer networks, reduce impulsivity and teaches prosocial decision making.

The peaceful classroom environment supports learning, wellbeing, participation and confidence.

The school is focused on building vocabulary, numeracy and literacy along with extra learning opportunities such as the recently held Possum Magic workshop for students from foundation to grade 2.

This workshop was followed up with an excursion to see the Possum Magic show at the Swan Hill town hall.

Principal Louisa Frost said the school had a strong focus on empowering students and creating a sense of belonging.

“Every student is known, valued and cared for at our school,” she said.

We are focused on building relationships between teachers and students as well building confidence in the children and a sense of connectedness to the school community.”

The school is implementing a stronger focus on phonics to support literacy learning and is proud of their gardening and book clubs.

Tooleybuc Central School has a strong family focus and is an integral part of the broader community.

“There is a family feel at our school where there is diversity and we are small enough that everyone really looks out for each other,” Mrs Frost said.

“We have students attending from different areas including Swan Hill, Nyah and Woorinen and bus services to accommodate this.

“Our families are also very involved in our school, often volunteering and supporting the students in their studies, excursions and events.”
