MALCOLM Turnbull should have stood by his party and served the remainder of his term as representative of the Wentworth electorate, says Member for Mallee Andrew Broad.
The Nationals MP told The Guardian he was “not really” surprised by the outcome of the Wentworth by-election at the weekend, which robbed the government of a one seat majority.
Now steering a minority government, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has pledged to “make it work”.
But, Mr Broad said he did not believe the by-election should have been held in the first place and criticised Mr Turnbull’s decision to stand down as Wentworth representative as “selfish”.
“I don’t like by-elections, I think by-elections should only happen if someone has a significant illness or something going on in their own family,” he said.
“If you run for Parliament, you commit to a three-year term.
“Now, just because Malcolm Turnbull went from having the prime ministership, he is still the member for Wentworth, he should have served his term out.
“I’m the assistant minister to the deputy prime minister, if I get a demotion it doesn’t mean I shoot through, you serve your term out.”
