Green Lake proved to be a hotspot for campers across the Easter long weekend, despite the fact the lake remains dry.
Located 10km south of Sea Lake, the lake has been dry for around 16 years, with the exception of some isolated flooding events around six years ago.
However, the lack of water didn’t deter campers, who came from far and wide to enjoy the peaceful surrounds.
Melbourne resident Dave Curwood was among those who camped at the lake during the Easter period.
“We first came here about five or six years ago when the lake still had water in it,” Mr Curwood said.
“It’s a great spot, especially at Easter and it’s an easy drive from Melbourne.”
Mr Curwood said camping at the lake had become somewhat of a tradition for his group of friends, who regularly returned to the region.
He said Green Lake’s accessibility, amenities and proximity to Sea Lake made it a desirable camping destination within the Mallee.
“The Murray is way too busy,” Mr Curwood said.
This year the group — which included nine adults, 15 children and four dogs — spent five nights at the lake.
“We’d love to see water returned to the lake,” Mr Curwood said.
Recalling their first year at the site, which coincided with the isolated flooding events, Mr Curwood described the lake as “just magic”.
“The water was 10 metres away from our campsite and it was just perfect.
“We had found our spot and it was perfect for the kids.”
The Green Lake Committee has been working tirelessly behind the scenes in a bid to resurface the lake bed and restore Green Lake back to its former glory.
Last year the state government allocated $72,000 to the group as part of its Community Sport and Recreation Program for drought affected communities across north-western Victoria.
