Swan Hill treated to top notch racing in scorching heat

A SMALL but vocal crowd of speedway lovers got out to Sonic Speedway on Saturday night, braving the heat to spend a night watching the Late Model Sedans.

When the Late Models took to the field for their hot laps, to get the feel of the track prior to the heats, Cameron Pearson’s car was blowing a lot of smoke and had to come infield for the crash crew to extinguish his car.

During the heats, it was between Pearson, Steve Vaughan, Daniel Barton and Brock Edwards.

The four racers were changing positions all night, meaning as the evening headed towards the final the flag could have been anyones to take.

The final was 20 laps with Pearson in pole position.

Barton was able to pass him but had an accident and retired from the race.

Pearson now had Brock Edwards and Scott McPherson right behind him, but was too strong and took the flag with the latter second and third.

Standard Saloons had competitive racing all night in the heats, but in the final Leighton Warburton was too good for the rest of the field and came home with the win.

Josh Campbell came in second and Debbie Jones, a visiting driver from Alexander, finished third.

VSC Formula 500s had the best field they’ve had this season, and put on a good show of driver skill and hard racing.

Matt Sayer was too good and took the final with Kane Charleson second and Graeme Porter third.

Our Juniors took to the field with first time driver Tenisha Stevens in SH 19.

Toby Carmichael was in the zone all night, making it challenging for the rest of the field in the final.

Carmichael took the winner’s flag with Josh Trainer second and Troy Higgins third.

VSC Opens had a good mix of cars but visiting driver, Hamilton’s Ben Naismith, was too good for our local drivers and Leighton Warburton came in second, with Tammie Edwards getting on the podium in third.

The next Sonic Speedway event will be the Mallee Masters Street Stock feature on Saturday, March 4 from 6pm.
