A chance for all to celebrate together

Shire residents came together to celebrate Australia Day with free barbecues in Balranald and Euston, awards and a citizenship ceremony.

About 200 people attended celebrations in Balranald and 50 in Euston. Albert “Berty” Lansdown was named citizen of the year for his years of tireless service to the greater Balranald community.

Mr Lansdown has been a volunteer driver for Adult Day Care, is an active member of the Balranald headquarters of the Rural Fire Brigade, volunteers for Balranald Meals on Wheels and was the first volunteer driver for the Health and Community Care (HACC) service, among many other things.

“Berty is a very well loved and appreciated person by all who know him,” his citation read.

“He is a very caring and knowledgeable person, and can also tell a good yarn.

“Berty is one of those quiet achievers that does not seek recognition for his community service, and is a worthy recipient of the 2017 Australia Day Citizen of the Year award for Balranald Shire.”

The shire had two residents become citizens during the celebrations, Antonio Trinchi and Fiona Scoleri.
