Journey to get that perfect picture

AMATEUR photographers in the Swan Hill district are turning their focus to capturing images and submitting in the upcoming Swan Hill Show.

The popular photography section in the leisure centre pavilion will be judged prior to the show, with strict rules and regulations in place to ensure fairness.

That included photo sizes and their presentation, while only amateurs were permitted to enter. A professional is someone that “derives the greater percentage of their income as a photographer”.

All work had to be completed in the past 12 months and exhibits must be photographed by the exhibitor and not repeated entries from the previous show.

Photographer Gail Camelinat said she enjoyed the process of exhibiting, well before her work was on show.

“It’s a thrill to just have my photography recognised and seeing other people’s work as well,” she said.

“I get a lot of joy being in the car, going for a drive and stopping at different places to capture.

“It’s about exploring your own backyard, heading off on the road never been down.

“It’s amazing what you can see when you start looking, sometimes by chance, often by getting in really close to something.”

Ms Camelinat said it paid to stop and wander through the Mallee bush.

“I have been out with friends previous years and it’s great to share same interests and encourage each other and make suggestions,” she said.

A previous show winner, in Kerang, Ms Camelinat is no stranger to seeing her name written on prizes.

“It’s nice to see your name … takes you back to being in school,” she said.

“I really encourage fellow photographers to get involved, support the show and have your work showcased.

“It’s inspiring and makes you want to keep capturing the beauty.”
