Locals safe from dramas at SPC

SWAN Hill Summer Fruit Development Association president Michael Tripodi said
the issues facing SPC Ardmona should not affect local growers.

The Lake Boga
fruit grower said there might be some occasional small amounts of fruit, such as
apricots, going to the Shepparton cannery, but overall the Swan Hill region had
long been based on fresh fruit.

Despite this, Mr Tripodi said there might be
some flow-on effects for local growers.

“It’s not a good look for the fruit
industry,” he said.

“It might put a little more in the domestic fruit market,
from people looking to do something else with their fruit.”

Mr Tripodi said
rather than a bail-out from government, the cannery needed to become more
efficient.
