THE future of the Swan Hill drag strip has had a bumpy ride this week and the drag-racing community is hoping for a final resolution on Monday.
Swan Hill Council voted down a motion in favour of Skid City consortium 4-3 on Tuesday, stipulating due diligence and fair access for other submissions as the reason.
Cr Les McPhee, Cr Jacquie Kelly, Cr Nicole McKay and Cr Chris Jeffrey opposed the motion.
They voiced concerns that due diligence had not been satisfied and an expression-of-interest process should begin.
More than 50 people attended the meeting, most in support of the motion proceeding, and were dejected by the result.
Swan Hill Drag Club president Gary Rovere said he was “devastated” by the news and it was a huge blow for the club, which had worked hard since the track’s concept almost a decade ago.
Many people took to social media to voice their concerns about the decision and, in a shock announcement, the council advised a notice of rescission had been submitted.
At item 2.1 in the council’s agenda for a meeting to be held on Monday, Cr Jeffrey gave notice to rescind the council resolution made on Tuesday relating to the Skid City’s submission to lease the site.
He said his position was now similar to the motion put forward by Cr Bill Moar, who voted in support of the motion.
In a prepared preamble statement, Cr Jeffrey highlighted the challenges faced in decision-making with the council.
“While processes provide a structured and fair approach, my gut tells me that I have not made the correct decision,” he said.
“Balancing these elements requires a careful consideration of all perspectives, ensuring the final decision not only respects procedural integrity, but also aligns with the best interests of the community.”
He said his decision on Tuesday put at risk any further private investment for a very specialised sport.
The council will review the matter at Monday’s unscheduled meeting.
