Moulamein Notes, September 13

River rise on the way

GET your fishing rods out. Finally we may be getting a good rise down our Edward. The flow below Stevens Weir is over 1140 megalitres a day and increasing rapidly. The Edward at Moulamein is rising at over 520 megs and almost 0.9 metres. The fish went mad down near Kyalite the other day.

Up to a 62cm yeller and plenty of cod as well, I have heard. One young feller in town tried to get a yeller behind the bowling club the other day and landed a 58cm cod. I have heard of a few more yellers getting landed around town as well. So, the fish may finally be back. Cod season is closed for three months so a feed of yellers is almost as good.

Seasonal update breakfast

OUR local LLS will be suppling breakfast at Mallan Hall at 7.30am for a feed, or turn up at 8am for the update on the September 17. There will be a winter cropping update by our local BR&C agronomist. We will learn about the new Dilpurra farming forecaster weather station, soil moisture probe and pasture modelling. Animal nutrition options for a drier season as well as local farmer Nathan Hall’s experience with forage radish. Please RSVP to Kimberley by September 16 on 0439 531 306.

No need to vote

RESIDENTS in Wakool Ward will not be required to vote as the three nominees have been elected unopposed. Those in the Greater Murray Ward and the Moama Ward will be required to vote in the council election this Saturday. If you are not sure what ward you are in. ring our council to find out.

Snakes Out And About.

SNAKES are out looking for a feed and a mate and there are plenty of them. They are big, fat and shiny. We had a snake plague back in the 70s after three wet years. Great fun when you are a kid killing tiger snakes just because we could. This time we went from a mouse plague to a flood that bred the frogs up to plague proportions, then another wet year to keep the frog numbers up to keep our increasing numbers of snakes well fed.

Going by the numbers of frogs croaking out in the paddocks while I am watering, the snakes will just keep eating and breeding. Saw my first southern bell frog for the season this week. Haven’t heard them yet but it seemed happy to be sitting in the middle of the Hay Road. Could be why they are endangered everywhere else except for our district – less traffic.
