Praise for Swan Hill’s medical mentorship of Monash students

MONASH University School of Rural Health Professor Shane Bullock praised the workforce at Swan Hill District Health (SHDH) for their expertise and mentorship of the medical students.

“I can tell you from last semester’s cohort that they love being in Swan Hill,” Prof Bullock said.

“They have lots of patient contact, they see multiple patients per day and building confidence in terms of their skill sets as developing doctors.”

Prof Bullock said the holistic care approach in rural healthcare attracted many students to placements in the country.

“The GP sees patients in the community and follows them through hospital for any procedures then come back to the GP once their complete hospital treatment,” he said.

“It’s very patient-centered, where doctors aren’t waiting to see patients, they are following patients through the process.

“Because Dr Ernan Hession is imbedded in the hospital, the students get a richer experience to interact with patients in a hospital and acute setting.”
