Runners’ evolving team spirit

A TEAM spirit is evolving among Swan Hill Specialist School’s cross country runners.

Fifteen Swan Hill students are set to compete in the specialist schools’ Victorian cross country championships in Melbourne next month, after getting the best results at the school’s own competition in April.

Six years since she first took students to state competition in Melbourne, specialist school teacher Virginia Allen said a representation at the national equivalent was possible.

She said the students were training twice a week.

“They’re willing to put in the hard yards and can see the results in action,” she said.

“It’s not about winning, it’s about doing your best and winning is the reward. They’ve got a sense of doing well as a team and as an individual.”

Allen said the students’ preparation had involved cross-training at the Swan Hill Leisure Centre, a process that had broken down some barriers to participation.
