Country theme a hit with community

ANIMALS, cowboy hats and lots of dancing were present at Swan Hill Christian School’s country fair last Tuesday.

The free event was open to the whole community as a way for people to engage with the school.

Food was available and prizes were given out to those who came best dressed in their cowboy attire.

Principal Kristy Wilson said this was the school’s first country fair, with the only other big event having been the Easter egg hunt with 250 people in attendance.

“We wanted to create a community atmosphere and thought this might be a fun way to do it,” Ms Wilson said.

The school currently has 29 students and is located in Aerodrome Road in the outskirts of Swan Hill.

Ms Wilson said she was proud of having the school’s location in a rural setting.

“We have 110 acres out here, we have a BMX track and a massive Stephanie Alexander kitchen garden,” she said.

“It provides lots of opportunities for out students to grow and we have lots of room for them to just run and be active and to learn outside.

“Just because we’re smaller in number doesn’t mean we can’t do great things for the community.”

Former teacher at Swan Hill Christian School Emily Westblade is now a pastor at the Grain Shed, but she returned to support the school on the day.

“It’s a great opportunity to build community and have some fun,” Ms Westblade said.

“We were also excited to come because we were part of the Easter egg hunt in April and thought that was amazing and fun too.”

Ms Westblade moved to Swan Hill with her husband and co-pastor Shane and together they have been settling in to the community.

“I think the more community events you get involved in, the more you think to keep an eye out for things in the future,” she said.
