THE business 12 Good Eggs, based in Moulamein and Barham, has had a smashing year despite COVID-19, with more people choosing to cook at home and support local business.
On World Egg Day, October 8, Federal Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud said Australia produced 376 million dozen eggs in 2020-21, with this figure forecast to grow to 387 million dozen in 2021-22.
Owner Kate Redfearn said that while 12 Good Eggs was supplying fewer cafes and restaurants due to closures, it had seen a “huge increase” in online orders.
“We can deliver to Melbourne, Sydney and regional Victoria, and we have found more people are choosing this option as they are learning to cook at home, with kids in particular becoming involved in cooking,” Ms Redfearn said.
“And we are finding that more people are appreciating where their food is coming from, and there has been an uptick in people choosing to support small local businesses.”
Ms Redfearn and her parents acquired 12 Good Eggs, based on a Moulamein farm, six years ago, with grading and processing occurring in Barham.
“On the farm we have 3000 to 4000 chickens and they are all truly free-range,” she said.
The business’s eggs are available from The Modern Butcher (Swan Hill), Boo’s Cafe and Providore (Swan Hill and Lake Boga), Walker’s IGA (Kerang), The Una IGA (Cohuna), Moulamein IGA (Moulamein), Barham Foodworks and Barham IGA and Balranald Foodworks.
