More Covid breaches in the region

THE latest Covid breaches in the region occurred in Swan Hill and Tooleybuc, with an illegal gathering and people trying to enter into Victoria without a permit.

On Saturday August 21, police were called to two addresses in Swan Hill in relation to reported breaches of Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton’s directions.

“At one home police found a gathering of six people, three of which will receive penalty notices,” Leading Senior Constable Tania Peters said.

“At another home police found a large gathering, where nine penalty notices will be issued to people found at this address for failing to comply with the CHO’s directions.”

Lead-Snr-Const Peters said on Sunday August 15 police also handed out infringement notices to two Queenslanders at the Tooleybuc border checkpoint.

Lead-Snr-Const Peters said a 29-year-old man and a 17-year-old man did not have permits to enter Victoria.

Police can issue fines under Operation Sentinel, a taskforce established in March last year to enforce containment measures put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Victoria Police can issue on-the-spot fines of up to $1817 for adults and up to $10,904 for businesses for refusing or failing to comply with emergency directions, a public health risk power direction, or public health directions to provide information.

A $5452 fine can be issued to anyone found breaching gatherings directions in the home or outside, or for anyone who breaches the requirement to isolate or quarantine under a direction from the Victorian Department of Health.

Fines of up to $21,808 for individuals and $109,044 for corporations are possible through the court system.

People not wearing a mask without an exemption can be fined $200.
