Wycheproof turns pink for Mother’s Day

WHILE many mothers and their families would have spent yesterday’s wet, cold morning enjoying a breakfast in bed, the Wycheproof community braved the rain to participate in the town’s first ever Mother’s Day Classic.

The Mother’s Day Classic walking or running event, which is held in different towns and cities across Australia, has been run every Mother’s Day since 1998 and aims to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation.

The inaugural Wycheproof event was hosted by the Wycheproof Community Resource Centre.

Centre manager and event organiser Jenna McNicol said it went better than she had expected, estimating more than 130 people participated.

“I thought about 80 to 100 originally, but it was lucky I was in Melbourne this week because I had to pick up more medallions,” she said.

Ms McNicol said unlike in other areas, the Sunday morning rain didn’t deter Wycheproof locals from participating — in fact, it made the agriculture-dependent community even more enthusiastic.

“We really embrace the rain when we can get it so people were more than happy to get out and about — it was great,” she said.
