Some of Swan Hill’s youth face major barriers to get their probationary licence, but a mentor driving program has been able to get some of our most disadvantaged to take control on the roads.
But more volunteers are needed to help young people get their P-plates.
The L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program matches volunteer mentors with young people who face barriers to getting their required 120 hours of driving practice.
Young drivers are given a number of free professional driving lessons before working one-on-one with their mentor to practice driving in the program’s car.
“There are now 34 young people registered with the program but we can’t help all of them at the moment because we don’t have enough volunteers trained up,” program officer Ross Palmer said.
