Little library at St Marys

THE students of St Mary’s primary school are passionate about reading and their books.

This prompted the Student Representative Council to take on some fund raising to create a little free library at the school gate for public use.

Money was raised through the monthly casual dress day, that occurs on the last Friday of each month.

St Mary’s Primary School principal, Kate Quin, said that the project came about after the children had read about other children that didn’t always have enough books to read.

“There was an initiative that came out of COVID to have little free libraries around the place when libraries were closed, Mrs Quin said.

“So they have sprung up all over the place, and we raised our money so that we could also have one.

“It arrived as flat pack kit and our amazing handyman put it together, painted it and installed it.

“It has already proved so popular we have ordered another one with some of the funds left over from the first one.

“It has a little sticker on it that says ‘take a book, leave a book, or bring back a book’.

“Quite often you will see one of the kids take books for their siblings at home.

“The children in the school are avid readers and there are sometimes books there that are not available in the library, so they take them to read and then bring them back.”
