THE internationally acclaimed Soweto Gospel Choir is set to light up Swan Hill town hall with their powerful performance, HOPE, on February 16.
Their performance is a celebration of African gospel music, freedom songs, and iconic renditions that honour the spirit of resilience and unity.
The three-time Grammy Award winning choir will take the audience on a musical journey, starting with South African freedom songs that reflect the struggles and triumphs of the apartheid era.
The concert will then transition to soulful renditions of the 1950’s American civil rights anthems, paying homage to legends like James Brown, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin.
At the center of HOPE is a tribute to the enduring fight for justice and equality, drawing inspiration from Nelson Madela’s freedom movement and the civil rights legacy of Dr. Matin Luther King Jr.
The choir’s vibrant harmonies, dynamic stage presence, and colourful attire promise to deliver an emotionally charged experience that will resonate with audiences of all ages.
Soweto’s Choir Master Shimmy Jiyane said HOPE is a special show for all involved in the Soweto Gospel Choir.
“These are the songs that we grew up on; that inspired us and that keep inspiring us, she said.
“HOPE showcases how the power of song and the power of performance can inspire and soundtrack real change.”
Singing Producer Toni Rudov said the choir are looking forward to performing in Swan Hill.
“When we tour Australia, we tour lots of regional venues”, she said.
“We saw Swan Hill and Mildura on the map and decided they’d be great places to perform between our shows in Melbourne and Adelaide.
“The choir are almost like cultural ambassadors for South Africa, people are often moved when they sing.
“They open their hearts and sing songs which often are based on the struggle era.
“We are looking forward to sharing our songs with our Swan Hill audience.”
The shows sponsor, Andrew Kay & Associates Pty Ltd said it’ll be a memorable night.
“It’s always a special treat to bring the unique and inspirational power of Soweto Gospel Choir to Aussie shores”, a spokesperson said.
“The energy and presence they bring is unparalleled.
“Following a smash season at the 2023 Adelaide Fringe, we’re excited to share their extraordinary talent with the rest of Australia.”
