Bowls notes, May 20

SWAN HILL

THE Swan Hill Bowls Club May Carnival ended on a happy note on Tuesday, with numbers having lived up to expectations over the 11 days based on last year’s figures. Visitors from many parts of Victoria, with one from South Australia joining the Ballarat group, plus many local bowlers, have supported our carnival – sincere thanks to all.

The weather has been a bit tricky some days, with light misty rain at times but not cold. Only the Ladies Triples on Thursday morning had to be cancelled, otherwise all have been happy to press on regardless, donning their weather jackets.

For results, please see story on page 42.

A very successful carnival has ended, with everyone looking forward to May, 2023. Thanks to all our volunteers who have contributed in many ways to the smooth running of our Autumn Carnival. Club activities will return to normal as of today, with our Friday Frolic starting from 3pm – names in by 2.30pm. Social Bowls will resume on Wednesday, May 25 from 1.30pm.

Please note, the annual meeting has been postponed until further notice – nominations are still open.

RACECOURSE

RACECOURSE players supported Swan Hill’s May Carnival, with several tasting success. Working backwards, Rob Hayes, Arthur Threadgold and John Ford won the triples on Tuesday, with Glenn McIntosh, Graeme Bennett and Helen Frame finishing runners-up. On Monday, Val Lindsay and Helen Frame won the ladies’ pairs.

The winners of Jackpot bowls on Wednesday were Don Poulton and Michael Grace, with two wins and +16 shots. Runners-up, with a score of one win and +9, were Norm Smith, Lois Lockhart and Bruce Mitchell. Visitors from Truganina, Lara and Nyah enjoyed the day and the jackpot did not go off.

Tonight, we have tea, members’ draw, raffles and entertainment by Paul Rovere – it should be a really good evening.

On Sunday, May 22 we have our Tasco Any Combination Triples, with all names or teams to be in by 11am, for a 12.30pm start. Casual dress.

The Club’s AGM will be held on Tuesday, May 24, starting at 7pm. Jobs up for grabs are president, and committee members, who will take up positions on match committee and pennant selection, and social committee. Please come along and have your say about how our club should function.

LAKE BOGA

LAST Saturday’s Jackpot Bowls ended in a tie between Les Barnes, Vicki O’Bree and Barb Davies and Ken O’Bree, Ted Hyland and Robyn Jolley, while runners-up were Alec Jobling and Keith Anderson. The jackpot was not won, so it will be $105 tomorrow.

Wednesday’s social bowls winners were Greg Clifford, Keith Anderson, Bones Smith and Rod Dewhurst, while the runners-up were Terry Haw, Ian Ross, Ted Hyland and Mary Lynas. On duty next week are Terry Haw and Lyn Maher.
