MURRAY DOWNS

IT is with great sadness that the Murray Downs Bowls Club lost one of their dear members Noel Delmenico last Friday.

Noel was a Murray Downs Bowls member for many years who was bowling with us until very recently.

Noel will be dearly missed.

He was a true gentleman who was always very friendly and courteous to all.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to Irene and to Noel’s four children and families.

Social bowls last Thursday was played in beautiful weather.

The winners on the day were a pair, comprising of Dawne Holland and Bob Napier, well done to you both. The jackpot was won by Lindsay Toomer so he went home a very happy man.

Members rostered for duty next Thursday, February 6, are Lindsay Toomer and Jesse Cox.

Murray Downs President’s Day Tournament, sponsored by Graham Wealth, is being held on Sunday, February 9.

It is an any-combination, three-bowls triples tournament with a 9.30am start.

Teams and single entries to Dawne Holland on 0402 020 996 or Carl Fox on 0429 855260 by 5pm Saturday, February 8. Prizemoney of $600 and great raffles to be won.

On Australia Day our Mary and Peter Hooper day event was won by Peter Loughran, Carol Smith and Bob McIntosh, with three wins and 82 points.

In second place were the Murray Downs team of Shorty McCaig, and Mardeine and Riaan De Villier, with three wins and 79 points. Third place went to Kylie Gardner, Tony Evans and Allan Lindsay, with two wins and a draw.

Our Smiles tournament, set for Sunday, February 2, has been postponed, due to the projected temperature.

Our normal last Friday of the month tea will be held on Saturday, February 1, because of a clash of dates. Double members’ draw, raffles and Sharon’s meal should be a good finish to a hot day’s play.

The past two Fridays have been well attended and suddenly the jackpot has risen to almost $100. Your entry needs to be in by 2.30pm, ready for a 3pm start.

This is an afternoon for all to enjoy. Socialise on and off the green, retiring to the cool clubhouse to enjoy Happy Hour drinks, a light snack and try your luck in the raffle prizes on offer.

Last Saturday ended in disappointment for Swan Hill Division 1, losing to Moulamein by one shot. B. Husson, G. Scandolera, J. Husson and O. Lewis almost carried the team to victory, winning their rink by 20 shots. F. Jacka’s players were defeated by M. Evans 21-19. D. Compton’s team gained the upper hand on B. R. Poole’s players made it home by four shots against L. Walters’ side.

The weather next Tuesday is not looking good and all teams will be waiting to see if the heat rule comes into play. It will be the last game before finals begin.

Division 1 are listed to play Racecourse 2 at home and Division 2 will be required to go to Balranald if the game goes ahead.
