Murray Downs wins MVPA grand final

MURRAY Downs have come away victorious on the big stage with a five-shot win against Moulamein in the Murray Valley Playing Area division-one grand final on the Saturday.

The Rams were defeated twice against Moulamein coming into the grand final clash and it was clear Murray Downs were hoping to show their true mettle.

Moulamein on the other hand were eager to show their talents and win their first title in 15 years.

For Murrey Downs, David Uebergang’s team won on the first rink by 12 shots against Moulamein led by Dennis Compton.

Murray Downs’ skipper Kenneth O’Bree also led his team to win on the second rink by seven shots against Mark Evans’ team with a score of 28 to 21.

On the third rink, Moulamein’s Aaron Worboyes won with 31 shots to Peter Furnell’s team who had 17 shots.

The final score was 80 shots and 10 points for Murray Downs while Moulamein had 75 shots and 2 points.

Murray Downs skipper David Uebergang said the team planned to celebrate the well-earned win.

“I feel ecstatic, we were rank underdogs, we were beaten by Moulamein two times already this year,” he said.

“The one that was most important game though, and I’m delighted we got up and won.

“Now we plan on going back to the club to have a barbeque to celebrate.”

In the division two grand final, Balranald took the chocolates from Racecourse 3 when they faced off in their grand final clash.

Balranald managed to get the better of their opposition on all three rinks.

Adam Boynton’s team won the first right by 14 shots with a final score of 29 shots to 15 shots.

Mat Coates’ team won the second rink by 19 points with the final score 35 shots to 16 shots.

On the final rink, Rodney Lusty cleared Racecourse 3s Ian Lockhart’s team by nine points.

The final score was Balranald 90 shots and 12 points while Racecourse 3 only had 48 shots all up.

Murray Downs 3 took and impressive victory against Tooleybuc in division 3, sneaking home with an eight-point win.

On the first rink, Murray Downs’ team led by Gregory Robertson won by three points in a close encounter against Tricia Armstrong and her team, with the final score being 28 shots to 25 shots.

Alexander Smith’s Tooleybuc side won the second rink by 19 points with 36 shots to Robert Smith’s team who managed a final score of 17 shots.

Murray Downs broke away in the third rink with Phil Magano and his side winning by an impressive 24 shots.

Aaron Adams’ team managed 13 shots but it was no match for Murray Downs who racked up 37 shots.

The grand final trophy went to Murray Downs with 82 shot, 10 points to Tooleybuc 74 shots and two points.

Division four grand final was played between Racecourse 5 and Nyah District 2 across two rinks, with the Demons taking home the accolades in a convincing win.

Mary Heap and her team won the first rink for the Demons in a four-shot win, with the final score 30 shots to 26 shots.

In the second rink, Nyah District 2 was led by Bruce Macdonald and his team won with a 13-shot difference.

The final score for the second rink gave victory to the Demons, 27 shots to 14 shots.

Nyah District 2 took the win overall with 57 shots and 10 points, while Racecourse 5 only managed 40 shots in total.
