No plans to scrap council food and organic waste collection

MURRAY River Council’s (MRC) rollout of a new food and organic waste kerbside collection won’t be impacted by a similar scheme announced by the NSW government last week.

The food and garden organics waste collection will be rolled out by MRC in mid-2022.

The council successfully applied for a $321,914 grant through the NSW government to begin collecting residential food and garden organics from the former Wakool Shire area.

Last week, the government announced green bins for food and organic waste would be rolled out across the state, under its plastics plan and waste strategy.

A council spokesperson said the NSW government’s plan wouldn’t affect council’s program.

“Council received funding under the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Waste Less Recycle More program to implement it, which is NSW government funding anyway,” they said.

“So all elements of our implementation will be in-line with the statewide rollout.

“Timing still remains the same for us of July 2022.”

Meanwhile, plastics like single-use lightweight bags, cotton-buds, straws and stirrers will be phased out.
