Original and best rural show ready to resume

IT’S been two long years since the Swan Hill District Agricultural and Pastoral Society has been able to host its signature agricultural event in its original format.

With the two-day show just days away, the showground is a hive of activity as dedicated volunteers work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure its success.

Providing a platform for the region to showcase their skills and talents, while highlighting the district’s vibrant agricultural industry, this year’s show features a packed schedule.

Swan Hill District Agricultural and Pastoral Society president Reg Packer said final touches to the show were taking place and he was looking forward to seeing all the entries roll in.

“The people of Swan Hill love their show and are always very supportive,” Mr Packer said.

“We’re very keen to see it come back again.

“It is amongst other things, a showcase of Swan Hill.”

And showcase it will be.

The show will feature everything from show jumping and poultry to photography and art and crafts.

There will be a host of live entertainment, wood chopping, sideshow alley, showbags and fireworks.

Steeped in history, the Swan Hill show started in 1895 and according to Mr Packer has stood the test of time thanks to the support of its hard-working volunteers, sponsors and the wider community who continue to support it.

Mr Packer said the last two years had been difficult, dealing with the uncertainties of a worldwide pandemic, noting this was only the second time in the show’s history that the event has been cancelled.

“Prior to COVID, it was only ever cancelled once before, and that was in 1902 which was an extreme drought year,” Mr Packer said.

Set to make its COVID comeback, this year’s show will be bigger and better than ever, with something for everyone.

This year marks Mr Packer’s 10th year as president of the show and he looks forward to many more successful events.

“The most rewarding part is to see the show still going strong,” Mr Packer said.

“It’s well supported by the community, local businesses and Swan Hill Rural City Council.

“I’m grateful for the support, and as long as we’re being supported, we will keep it going.”
