Working dogs put through their paces

WORKING dogs will be put through their paces when they compete in the yard dog competition at this year’s show.

Tyntynder oval will come to life on Saturday as stockmanship is put to the test.

Yard dog chief steward Noel Templeton said control, connection and stock handling skills would play a vital role in determining the winner.

The Chinkapook farmer trains working dogs in his spare time and concedes a lot of effort goes into them.

While he has used Utes and motorbikes in the past to manage his livestock, Mr Templeton said he has moved towards dogs in the last 25 years.

“Dogs make things so much easier when they are well trained,” he said.

While the competition predominately features Kelpies, it is open to other breeds.

This year’s yard dog competition will include four different classes, the Encouragement Trial, Novice Trial, Improver Trial and Open Trial.

Mr Templeton said the sheep dog trials were always interesting and action-packed.

“It showcases what people can do with animals, in a nice, calm, orderly fashion.”
