New citizens welcome

SWAN Hill Rural City Council welcomed six new citizens at the spring citizenship ceremony last Friday.

Mayor Stuart King said welcoming the newest citizens to the municipality was not just a duty, but one of the most rewarding aspects of his role.

“It is an honour to participate in the final stage of an individual’s journey to becoming an Australian citizen,” he said.

Cr King said the citizenship ceremonies throughout the year offered an opportunity for every Australian citizen to reflect on their luck to call Australia home.

“When we welcome new citizens from all over the world to our country, we receive so much – their skills, talents, and commitment to belonging to our great nation,” he said.

This year is significant as it commemorates the 75th anniversary of Australian citizenship, providing an opportunity to honour and celebrate the valuable contributions of each new citizen.

The ceremony began with a welcome to country by Kieaminda Charles and Imparja Pettit played the didgeridoo.
