A RESPECTED Sea Lake community member was honoured with an Australia Day award for their exceptional voluntary contributions to the community.
Selina Cox was awarded the accolade which highlighted her tireless dedication and community spirit which has helped advance the Sea Lake community and its people.
Described as a quiet achiever but worthy recipient, Ms Cox has touched many residents throughout the Sea Lake district.
“They epitomise charity and generosity of time and spirit,” her Australia Day citation said, noting she was a “community minded person, who puts others before themselves and who acts in a way to ensure the best outcomes for everyone.”
Born and raised in Sea Lake, Ms Cox has been actively involved in the community throughout her life, with many people touched by her “kind and generous actions”.
“Being of service to others comes naturally to our nominee – they offer before being asked, work tirelessly without seeking thanks, and choose to step in, sometimes in the most difficult moments, to support others,” her citation said.
Ms Cox has actively contributed to various groups and causes which support and nurture the town’s youth, including local sporting clubs and the Sea Lake Preschool Committee.
She has also been a member of the Sea Lake Community Complex Committee for many years, providing a valued perspective when it comes to managing the important community asset.
Ms Cox has also made a significant contribution to the Sea Lake Nandaly Football, Netball and Hockey Club, where she’s held the role of canteen convenor for many years.
Heavily involved in all aspects of catering for the club, Ms Cox ensures the smooth running and coordination of the kitchen, not only during game days, but on training nights, and at other local functions.
She will long be remembered for her innovative ice-cream bar, which has been a hit with all members of the club.
“Her ice-cream bar, especially for the kids has proven to be a real treat and has seen our youngest, and at times some of our oldest, queue up for a sweet treat.”
Her dedication to the Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers Football Netball and Hockey Club has been recognised on several occasions and Ms Cox was the recipient of the Best Club Person Award in 2018, and again last year.
These accolades are a testament to her ongoing dedication and service to this major community group and its members.
Additional to this, Ms Cox has coordinated various fundraising events and campaigns to support locals in times of hardship.
She’s also organised cake stalls, raising money for breast cancer and a host of other events coordinated through her role at Tyrrell College.
Her service to the local community has been described as “admirable” and through her various voluntary roles, Ms Cox has helped build a stronger, more resilient and connected Sea Lake community, fostering a sense of unity and cooperation.
