Fun day scoops student award

A GROUP of industrious Tyrrell College students have been honoured with a prestigious award for their exceptional efforts in planning and organising a community event for the Sea Lake district.

The Sea Lake Community Fun Day, which took place in October, showcased the student’s dedication, leadership and organisational skills, as they planned and executed an inclusive fun-filled afternoon for the whole community, attracting more than 200 people to the event.

From pony rides and inflatables to reptile encounters and a movie screening, the Community Fun Day had all the makings of a successful event, and the student’s commitment and hard work has not gone unnoticed.

The event was awarded the Sea Lake Community Event of the Year at Sea Lake’s Australia Day awards.

Presented by Advance Sea Lake Inc, the award acknowledged the collaborative effort the seven students put into organising the event after attending the Alpine School for Student Leadership during Term 2 last year.

“The leadership group spent many hours to make this event inclusive for all families to afford. This included making presentations at the local Lions clubs and businesses, where they talked about their time away at leadership school and why this event would benefit the community,” their Australia Day citation said.

“By organising this community event, it provided the seven youths the opportunity to increase their capacity for event management and put into practice the skills they gained while they were away. The event also gave them the opportunity to connect with their community.”

Advance Sea Lake Inc president Jenny Newell commended the students for their innovative approach, leadership skills and positive impact their event had on the wider community.

“In our community we have young confident leaders who are keen to stand up and be counted,” she said.

“The community look forward to watching these seven young inspirational role models grow, continuing to support you as you develop and refine your leadership skills in the coming years.”

Humbled by the award, the students said they were happy to volunteer their time for the betterment of the local community, adding “by dreaming big, you can achieve big things.”
