Food for all garden

BACK by popular demand the “Food For All” Family Edible Garden Day will return during the upcoming school holidays.

This free event will be on Wednesday April 9, from 10am to noon at George Lay Park, Swan Hill.

Food for All is a collaboration of local organisations and community groups who aim to build a vibrant and connected food system in the Swan Hill region.

One of their main aims is to help the community to grow their own food through sharing information and practical gardening skills.

The Family Edible Garden Day hopes to promote edible gardening from an early age by providing a variety of activities.

These include; Storytime with the Swan Hill Regional Library, outdoor games with RecLink, decorate and pot a plant with George Lay Community Garden and garden themed craft activities.

There will also be a scavenger hunt on the day where attendees are encouraged to check out each activity in order to find different symbols. By attending the event you’ll also have a chance to win a kid’s gardening pack which includes resources that will help kids to build their own garden at home.

The Swan Hill region is a bustling agricultural hub, with edible gardens being a great introduction for children to learn about food systems.

Growing their own produce teaches children responsibility and patience through watering and watching the plant grow.

Being able to grow your own food is rewarding as you are able to use fresh produce from the garden in cooking and IT also gives appreciation to all those who work in agricultural production to supply food to all.

Gardening is a great way to include more physical activity in your day, encourage healthy eating, and has been known to promote positive mental health.

Come along to the Family Edible Garden Day to learn more about edible gardens and have a fun day out with the family.
