THE Nyah Nyah West Heritage Week wrapped up over the weekend, leaving behind a strong sense of community, reflection, and celebration.
Locals and visitors alike came together to honour the past and enjoy the present through a series of heartfelt and memorable events.
The week officially commenced with the Anzac Day service on Friday which drew the largest crowd seen in years.
A particularly moving moment came from local resident Reg, who read aloud wartime letters written by his great-uncle.
Nyah West resident Sharyn Hatt said the personal touch left a lasting impact on attendees.
“It was a lot more than we expected,” she said.
“It was incredibly emotional. Many people were brought to tears.”
Following the service, around 40 people took part in a guided cemetery tour led by Steve Pentreath of the Genealogical and Historical Society.
Later that day, Nyah Nyah West United took on Woorinen at the Nyah Recreation Reserve.
A downpour made for a scrappy match, with Woorinen defeating the Dees by 20 points.
That evening, the Grand Hotel’s “Meet and Mingle” event brought locals together to reconnect with old friends and meet new faces.
Saturday brought vibrant energy to the town with the Heritage Weekend Market.
There was a bus tour, local producers, artisans, and community groups set up stalls, while families enjoyed displays of vintage cars, machinery, and historical memorabilia.
“The market was great; we had a really good turnout,” Ms Hatt said.
“Kids’ faces were getting painted, good music was playing, and everyone was relaxed and just enjoying the day.”
The school and senior citizens centre were also open, featuring exhibits of past newspapers, historical photos of town, school and families, and old town maps and documents.
Throughout the day, the local primary school, fire brigade, and the former bowling club all welcomed visitors.
Gordon Borchard also officially opened the doors of the Nyah History Museum, which showcased a collection of old machinery, wartime memorabilia, and well-preserved items.
That evening, the Heritage Weekend Celebration Ball lit up the town hall.
Ms Hatt praised the night of live music, dancing, and great food.
“The band was fantastic,” Ms Hatt said.
“The committee went above and beyond to ensure the weekend ran smoothly.
“Big thanks to Julie Sutton, Vicki Allen, Sandra Andrews, Pam Paynter, Wayne Hungerford, Ian Brauer and Helen Trafford for all their hard work.”
On the Sunday morning, residents had the chance to experience a special ecumenical church service overlooking the Murray River.
The weekend wrapped up with a family picnic at the Nyah Recreation Reserve and featured a BBQ, games and live music by Scoogs.
“The last three days really brought the community together,” Ms Hatt said.
“They’re lots of moments that reminded us of the rich history in Nyah and Nyah West.”
Though the festivities have come to a close, the memories created during Heritage Week will continue to echo through the Nyah Nyah West community for years to come.
