Mackillop College helping needy this winter

ST Mary MacKillop College Swan Hill’s staff and students gathered together to help those in need during last week’s Hearts and Hands mass.

The school collected donations of food, blankets and toiletries for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal to share with the community.

“We try to promote compassion and generosity at our school and we reflect very positively knowing the donations will help our community directly,” said director of Faith and Mission Alison Wright.

The donations were received by Swan Hill St Vincent de Paul President, Chris Mahon.

The items collected by the students and school community will directly benefit locals in need this winter.

Vinnies volunteers across Australia have reported an increasing demand for homelessness services and support this winter.

“You can help give them food so they are not going hungry and clothes so they are not cold, “St Vincent de Paul’s website reads.

“A helping hand with essential bills or the rent could be all that is standing between people and homelessness.”

The school’s donations to the winter appeal take place every year and have been welcomed by the community for over a decade.

“Knowing we could be helping people who are close to us that we don’t know are struggling, the school is always very happy to help out,” Ms Wright said.

Donations for this year’s Winter Appeal can be made directly to St Vinnies at 140 Curlewis St Swan Hill or online at donate.vinnies.org.au.
