SPIRITS were high on Tuesday as families gathered at Ken Harrison Reserve to celebrate the NAIDOC Week family fun day.
This year’s theme, Guided by Strength, Shaped by Vision, Carried by Legacy, was on full display in a vibrant celebration of culture, connection and community.
Iree Paul, proud woman of Wadi Wadi Wamba Wemba, opened with a heartfelt Welcome to Country, followed by a speech from Mayor Cr Stuart King.
Attendees were treated to a barbecue, cultural dancing, horse riding, boomerang decorating, games, crafts, and storytelling.
NAIDOC community member Conner Arif said the event was a great way to connect.
“Events like this are really big for us,” Mr Arif said.
“It’s a chance to get all the mob down and connect with each other.”
Fellow NAIDOC community member Josiah Johnston agreed with the sentiment.
“A lot of people grow closer at events like this,” Mr Johnston said.
“It’s a bond between people, and with the land.
“It’s not just for Indigenous people; it’s for everyone.”
