IT’S been a busy start to the year for students at Swan Hill North Primary School.
Having established routines and expectations in line with the school’s values and positive behaviour framework, students are looking forward to a great year ahead.
“Staff began the year looking at why we do what we do at SHNPS, and it all came back to ensuring we have students at the centre of all our decision making,” principal Brea Terris said.
“In our community we know all the students and their individual learning needs, which means we tailor programs to match their needs.”
Staff work together to plan learning using data and evidence and Ms Terris said this was a priority at the school.
Using tangible student data allows the school to plan ahead, meet goals and share success stories.
“Student data shows 96 per cent of students believe that their teacher has high expectations for their success,” Ms Terris said.
SHNPS student leaders have been active in the school community, leading by example.
Their leadership skills will be enhanced when they travel to Melbourne in the coming weeks to attend the Young Leaders Conference, where they will listen to prominent leaders from all walks of life.
Meanwhile, some of the region’s youngest learners are set to benefit with the addition of an onsite kindergarten at the school.
“Shine Bright Swan Hill North Kindergarten will be relocated to the new purpose-built facility at our premises and will be operational from next term,” Ms Terris said.
While the school was successful in obtaining a refurbishment grant which involved renovating part of the existing junior school building, Ms Terris said a new purpose-built facility would be built.
“Upon reflection, the Victorian School Building Authority and Department of Education and Training decided that the better option for the local community is to have a new modular build with a new yard on the school premises to house the kindergarten.”
Ms Terris said the new facility would assist with infrastructure needs to support the government’s rollout of increased hours for three and four-year-old kindergarten.
Ms Terris said the partnership with Shine Bright was an exciting change for the local community.
