STUDENT wellbeing, pathways and learning support are fundamental elements of life at St Mary MacKillop College.
These components tie with the school’s curriculum, supporting students to reach success throughout their secondary school journey.
“We believe in nurturing the whole person and building the capacity of our students to live well,” principal Michelle Haeusler said.
Year 7 and 8 students enjoy fortnightly wellbeing lessons with experienced wellbeing teachers and student counsellors.
“This year the program is centred on a program developed by the Resilience Project,” Ms Haeusler said.
Beyond Year 8, students participate in reflection days, confidence building sessions, consent education and safe partying programs, while senior students work closely with the school’s director of wellbeing once a fortnight.
“This is particularly important during this often stressful time.”
Career development is another important aspect of schooling at the college and the school’s pathways education program provides students with the tools they require to make informed career decisions.
“Career development starts in the early years of schooling and allows young people to discover their potential, explore their career interest and link their learning to future success in life,” Ms Haeusler said.
She said students often struggled with the concept of career development in their teenage years.
However, the pathways team allows students to navigate their options, while honing in on their skill set and passions.
Year 10 students gain valuable work placements as part of a work experience program, allowing students to explore various career paths in a real work environment.
“The team also works with Year 12 students once a fortnight to ensure that they are well prepared for VTAC applications, scholarship applications and applying for apprenticeships and traineeships,” Ms Haeusler said.
St Mary MacKillop College recognises that students learn and progress at different times and in different ways and provides a range of learning support and intervention programs, within an inclusive environment.
“Whatever your student’s needs are, we will work with you to ensure that the best support is provided so that your child is happy and well,” Ms Haeusler said.
