Teachers inspire dux

THIS year’s St Mary MacKillop College Dux is aiming for a career in teaching and wants to encourage future Year 12 students to follow in her footsteps.

Charlotte Angus was named as the college’s Dux for 2023, with an ATAR score of 94.05.

Ms Angus said she had breathed a sigh of relief after results were released at 7am on Monday.

“Being Dux is pretty surprising, but it feels pretty good,” she said.

“It’s good to know that all of my hard work has paid off.

“I wasn’t actually as stressed as I’d thought I would be before this morning, I was just thinking and hoping that those hours of hard work would pay off for me.

“That said, I still wasn’t expecting to go quite as well as I did.”

Ms Angus said she was looking towards a career in teaching, encouraged by the support she received from teachers in her VCE studies, and the happiness she felt helping her fellow students.

“I’m planning on having a gap-year next year, just to work and make a bit of money,” she said.

“Then I’m planning on going to university in Melbourne, with plans to study secondary teaching.

“My school was definitely a big part of me wanting to study teaching.

“I just really love to help fellow VCE students and other students to try and get the scores that they were after.

“The school has been very good. They’ve always given me great support.

“Having been there all throughout secondary school, I always felt like I could get help whenever I needed.”

Ms Angus said the support of those at school, and a well-balanced study load allowed her to succeed in her schooling.

“I did two Year 12 subjects last year, which made my workload this year a bit easier,” she said.

“I also made sure to keep that balance and did things with my friends, but I did have to be pretty dedicated to my study as well.

“There have been so many people there supporting me, like the library staff who have been there when I was busy studying.

“Mrs Howison was my mentor as school captain this year, she was so supportive and always helped me to stay positive.

“I’d love to thank all of my Year 12 teachers for this year and also both of the principals for always being there throughout my schooling when I started in Year 7.”

Ms Angus said she was looking forward to what the future has in store for her.

“I’ll be working a bit this summer,” she said.

“But a lot of my friends will be heading off to university next year, so I’ll be doing my best to spend some time with them before they leave.”
